Most streaming gear reviews are written by someone who unboxed a product, read the spec sheet, and filmed a two-minute talking head. That tells you nothing about whether a capture card survives a four-hour session, or whether a mic still sounds good once your room heats up and the fans spin.
CasterCove started because we kept buying gear on those reviews and getting burned. So we built a small lab, put the products through the thing they're actually for — a live broadcast — and wrote down what happened. Today the site covers 60 products across 8 categories from 28 brands, with 2,262 logged hours of testing behind the scores.
How we score
Every product gets a headline score out of 5, built from four sub-scores that we publish on each review page:
- Performance — does it do the job under load, for hours, without degrading?
- Build — materials, thermals, connectors, and whether it survives being moved.
- Ease of use — setup time, driver quality, and how much fighting it takes on a bad day.
- Value — performance per dollar against the direct alternatives we've tested, not against MSRP.
What a score means. 4.6+ is exceptional and we'd run it ourselves. 4.4–4.5 is excellent with a caveat we'll name. 4.0–4.3 works but something specific holds it back. Below 4.0 means we found a problem serious enough that most people should look elsewhere — and we'll tell you exactly what it was.
What we cover
Every product on the site is filed under exactly one category, so comparisons stay honest:
- Microphones — 14 products. Dynamic, condenser and wireless mics for voice that carries.
- Capture Cards — 10 products. Internal and external capture for console and dual-PC rigs.
- Webcams — 9 products. 1080p to 4K cameras that survive dim rooms and long streams.
- Streaming Software — 8 products. Encoders, switchers and multistreaming platforms.
- Lighting — 7 products. Key lights, panels and softboxes that flatter on camera.
- Editing & Design — 6 products. Video, audio and graphics tools for the post-stream cut.
- Control & Mixing — 4 products. Stream decks and audio consoles that run the show live.
- Studio Accessories — 2 products. Mounts, backdrops and the rest of the physical setup.
What we hold to
We test what ships
We buy or borrow retail units — the same box you'd get. No hand-picked review samples tuned by a PR team.
Live, not on a spec sheet
Every product runs through real broadcasts. 2,262 hours across 875 sessions, with the encoder running and an audience watching.
Scores that can lose
A 4.0 is a real score, not a soft no. If something drops frames or clips your audio, the number says so.
Affiliate, not for sale
We earn a commission when you buy through our links. That's it. Nobody pays for placement, a score, or a top-10 slot.
Re-tested as things change
Firmware and software move. When a product's behaviour changes materially, we re-test and update the score.
Written by people who go live
Everyone who tests for us streams or produces regularly. We notice the things that only show up in hour three.
How we make money
CasterCove is funded by affiliate commissions and display advertising. When you buy something through a link on this site, the retailer pays us a small percentage — the price you pay is identical either way.
We want to be blunt about the incentive that creates, and what we do about it: scores are set before links are added, and the ranking on our leaderboard is sorted purely by tested score. A product that pays a higher commission does not move up. Several of our highest-scoring products — OBS Studio, DaVinci Resolve, Audacity — are free and earn us nothing at all.
